Johnathan Bennett Sr. was born on October 26, 1936 in Clarendon, South Carolina. He was one of nine children by the late Benjamin and Janie Bennett.

On June 4, 1966 he married Joyce Corrinn Rose in New York City. In 1968 they had their only son, Jonathan Bennett Jr.

Jonathan started his career as an army medic from the years 1959-1961. He then became a foreman for Standard Finishing, where he joined the local printers union GCIU 119B. After retiring in 1994, Jonathan kept himself busy by working at Granby’s Funeral Service, Inc.
